On Dispersable Book Embeddings

چکیده
In a dispersable book embedding, the vertices of a given graphG must be ordered along a line `, called spine, and the edges of G must be drawn at different half-planes bounded by `, called pages of the book, such that: (i) no two edges of the same page cross, and (ii) the graphs induced by the edges of each page are 1-regular. The minimum number of pages needed by any dispersable book embedding of G is referred to as the dispersable book thickness dbt(G) of G. Graph G is called dispersable if dbt(G) = ∆(G) holds (note that ∆(G) ≤ dbt(G) always holds). Back in 1979, Bernhart and Kainen conjectured that any k-regular bipartite graph G is dispersable, i.e., dbt(G) = k. In this paper, we disprove this conjecture for the cases k = 3 (with a computer-aided proof), and k = 4 (with a purely combinatorial proof). In particular, we show that the Gray graph, which is 3-regular and bipartite, has dispersable book thickness four, while the Folkman graph, which is 4-regular and bipartite, has dispersable book thickness five. On the positive side, we prove that 3-connected 3-regular bipartite planar graphs are dispersable, and conjecture that this property holds, even if 3-connectivity is relaxed.

Book Embeddings of Posets
We introduce a special type of graph embedding called book embedding and apply it to posets. A book embedding scheme for bipartite graphs is given, and is used to extend the embeddings to general k-partite graphs. Finally, we view the Hasse diagram of a poset as a directed k-partite graph and use this scheme to derive a book embedding for arbitrary posets. Using this book embedding scheme, we a...
متن کاملExtremal Graph Theory for Book-Embeddings
A book-embedding of a graph is a linear ordering of its vertices, and a partition of its edges into non-crossing sets (called pages). The pagenumber of a graph is the minimum number of pages for which it has a book-embedding. After introducing concepts relevant to book-embeddings and their applications, we will describe the main results on the pagenumber for classes of graphs, particularly resu...
متن کاملEfficient, Compositional, Order-sensitive n-gram Embeddings
We propose ECO: a new way to generate embeddings for phrases that is Efficient, Compositional, and Order-sensitive. Our method creates decompositional embeddings for words offline and combines them to create new embeddings for phrases in real time. Unlike other approaches, ECO can create embeddings for phrases not seen during training. We evaluate ECO on supervised and unsupervised tasks and de...
متن کاملBook embeddings of graphs and a theorem of Whitney
It is shown that the number of pages required for a book embedding of a graph is the maximum of the numbers needed for any of the maximal nonseparable subgraphs and that a plane graph in which every triangle bounds a face has a two-page book embedding. The latter extends a theorem of H. Whitney and gives two-page book embeddings for X-trees and square grids.
متن کاملUpward Topological Book Embeddings of DAGs
Let G be a directed acyclic graph. An upward (k, h)topological book embedding of G is an upward book embedding on k pages of a subdivision of G where every edge is replaced by a path having at most h+2 vertices. In this extended abstract it is shown that every DAG with n vertices admits an upward (d + 1, 2dlogd ne − 1)-topological book embedding, where d is any integer such that d ≥ 2. The resu...
